Background of the Study

Religious beliefs play a significant role in how individuals cope with illness, including cancer. For many cancer patients, their faith provides comfort, hope, and strength, but it can also influence their decision-making regarding treatment options. Some patients may rely heavily on prayer and spiritual practices, potentially delaying or refusing conventional medical treatments. Others may integrate religious beliefs with their medical care, seeking both spiritual and medical interventions. Oncology nurses must understand the impact of religious beliefs on cancer treatment adherence to provide culturally competent care.

Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) in Ogun State serves a diverse patient population, many of whom may have strong religious beliefs that influence their approach to cancer treatment. This study seeks to assess the impact of religious beliefs on treatment adherence among cancer patients receiving care at OOUTH.

Statement of the Problem

The role of religious beliefs in cancer treatment adherence is complex and may vary depending on the patient’s individual perspective and cultural context. Some religious beliefs may encourage or discourage certain medical treatments, potentially affecting a patient’s adherence to prescribed therapies. However, the influence of religion on treatment adherence has not been extensively studied at OOUTH. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating the impact of religious beliefs on treatment adherence among cancer patients.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To explore how religious beliefs influence cancer treatment adherence at OOUTH.
  2. To assess whether religious beliefs act as a barrier or facilitator to cancer treatment adherence.
  3. To examine the role of oncology nurses in addressing the spiritual needs of cancer patients to enhance treatment adherence.

Research Questions

  1. How do religious beliefs influence cancer treatment adherence at OOUTH?
  2. What are the challenges faced by cancer patients in reconciling their religious beliefs with conventional medical treatments?
  3. How can oncology nurses support patients in integrating their religious beliefs with cancer treatment?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Religious beliefs significantly influence cancer treatment adherence among patients at OOUTH.
  2. Patients whose religious beliefs align with their medical treatment report higher adherence to prescribed therapies.
  3. Oncology nurses who incorporate spiritual care into their practice improve patient adherence to cancer treatments.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on cancer patients at OOUTH and assess the impact of religious beliefs on their adherence to treatment. Limitations include the challenge of generalizing findings across different religious groups and the subjective nature of adherence measures.

Definitions of Terms

  • Religious Beliefs: The set of spiritual or faith-based practices and convictions that influence an individual’s perception of health, illness, and medical treatment.
  • Treatment Adherence: The degree to which a patient follows the prescribed medical regimen, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other cancer treatments.
  • Oncology Nurses: Nurses specializing in cancer care, who are responsible for providing both medical and emotional support to patients.
